The death toll of the 6.9 magnitude quake that affected Negros Oriental Philippines, February 6 has hit 105, including 71, whose bodies were not yet recovered from two landsides that hit villages in the area.

The open firehouses were a unique opportunity for the community to meet the firefighters responsible for, protecting their neighborhoods and learn about fire safety.

In an effort to serve both communities more efficiently and effectively, the Lenawee County Chapter and the Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Red Cross are combining. The measure has received the unanimous support of both boards of directors. The consolidation will increase the capacity to respond to local disasters and sustain other services, while reducing overhead expenses.

Every 82 seconds a home fire breaks out, according to the National Fire Protection Agency. Fires can cause irreparable damage to homes and businesses displacing families and employees. Last year, the American Red Cross responded to 68,337 home fires across the country and provided comfort and basic necessities to those affected. This October 9-15 the Red Cross is helping families and businesses learn how to protect themselves and others from fires in observance of National Fire Prevention Week.
