In collaboration with United Nations Foundation, Center for Disease Control, World Health Organization and United Nations Children’s Fund the American Red Cross is working to provide vaccinations against measles and provide other public health necessities.  In 2001, is a long-term commitment and partnership among leaders in public health and supports the goal of reducing measles deaths globally by 90% by 2010 compared to 2000 estimates. Each year, measles kills nearly 454,000 people.  The majority, 410,000 of these victims are below the age of five.  The Measles Initiative was started to end this needles death around the world by broad vaccinations of children in Africa and has extended its campaign to Asia and the Americas.  The University Of Michigan Red Cross Club (UMRCC) and the Youth Communication Action Team (YCAT) works to raise money and awareness about measles in their high schools, middle schools and the community through bake sales, concerts, measles pin sales and benefit and dinner dance.

For every dollar raised, one child is vaccinated against measles. To know more, click here.
